Be a Hunger Hero! Triangle CANstruction wants to know: Who’s your hero? Whether Optimus Prime or Florence Nightingale, everyone will be a Hunger Hero to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. So let’s dust off our red capes and get building!
Here in the Triangle we will hold the event on April 1st (First Friday, downtown Raleigh). It will be a scavenger hunt downtown Raleigh in conjunction with First Friday. Structures will be scattered throughout local businesses and art galleries (CAM Raleigh, Capital Bank Plaza, Citrix, Alfred Williams, Red Hat and more!) Our theme this year is Heroes! We have 8 teams that have designs that range from Mighty Mouse and Captain America to Firefighters and Astronauts! We are estimating over 40,000 cans of food this year, which would make this our biggest event yet!
This year we also held a competition open to children of families supported by the Food Bank. We hosted them at the Salvation Army for pizza, craft time, and dress up on February 17th from 6-8pm. Their task was to draw a picture of their hero and tell us how their hero will fight hunger. The designs will be formatted and printed on our CANstruction t-shirts this year! Marbles Kid’s Museum graciously provided enough passes for all the children and their families to visit Marbles (children ages 8 under) and IMAX theater (children ages 9 and older).
In addition to supporting the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, this event raises awareness in the community with a creative and challenging competition. The creativity embodied with this event not only shows the generous spirit of the design profession, it offers a unique way for the public to appreciate good design. These incredible visual icons simultaneously create awareness for art, design and hunger relief — a powerful combination!
